LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP)–Wesley Clark, the retired general with a four-star military resume but no political experience, decided Tuesday to become the 10th U.S. Democratic presidential candidate, officials close to him said.

“He’s made his decision and will announce it tomorrow in Little Rock,” said Mark Fabiani, a spokesman for Clark.

Fabiani didn’t reveal Clark’s decision, but officials close to the former general said he told his fledgling campaign team that he is in the race.

Clark gathered advisers Tuesday in Little Rock, Ark., to discuss strategy. Supporters have spent months urging Clark to run, lining up $1 million in pledges and working to develop an organization Clark can use in the race.

Friends of Clark say the former general believes his four-star military service would counter President George W. Bush’s political advantage as a wartime commander in chief. Clark has criticized the Iraq war and Bush’s postwar efforts.

The 58-year-old Clark was a Rhodes scholar and was first in his 1966 class at West Point. He embarked on a long military career that included heading the U.S. Southern Command and serving as North Atlantic Treaty Organization Supreme Allied Commander and commander in chief of the U.S. European Command during the 1999 campaign in Kosovo.
