    In the first equation, 1/137 is Arthur Eddington’s now-discredited value for the fine structure constant. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Eddington#Fundamental_theory_and_the_Eddington_number) Homer-as-physicist is just the guy to follow Eddington on this rather than modern theory. Especially if he raises it to the 8th power.

    The second equation is accurate to 10 places, good enough for Homer maybe, but not exact.
