MiB: John Pizzarelli

This week, our Masters in Business radio podcast, we speak with Jazz guitarist and singer John Pizzarelli.

Known for a soft voice, charming stage presence, and knack for uptempo swing, Pizzarelli has recorded 23 albums, appeared as a guitarist or vocalist on 40 others, and been a session player on 100s of others. He has recorded a variety of jazz standards and Great American Songbook in his own urbane style, and has backed or opened for some of the biggest names in music, including Frank Sinatra, Paul McCartney, James Taylor, Natalie Cole and Rosemary Clooney.

Our conversation discusses how Jazz musicians make a living in the age of downloading and hiphop. A large part of the answer is live shows. Pizzarelli tours extensively with his own trio, quartet, and big band. He is also the author of the book “ World on a String: A Musical Memoir ;” He hosts Radio Deluxe – a nationally syndicated weekly radio program (co-hosted with his wife vocalist Jessica Molaskey).

The interview will be broadcast this weekend on Bloomberg radio. Listen to the full podcast on iTunesSoundCloud and on Bloomberg.com. Earlier podcasts can be found on iTunes and at Bloombergview.com.

John is a real artist. Taste, touch, and a willingness to share. One of my guitar playing friends met him at the Dakota and had a nice chat, which he really appreciated.
