MiB: Jeff deGraaf’s Macro Bets

This week on our Masters in Business podcast, we speak with Jeff DeGraaf, founder and chief technician of Renaissance Macro. He was formerly Chief Technician at Lehman Brothers. He has been the #1 rated technical analyst on Institutional Investor for 11 years running, with Renaissance Macro (“RenMac”) consistently top rated as well.

DeGraaf is unique in that he is both a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) as well as a Chartered Market Technician (CMT), giving him dual perspective different from most market observers. He describes the proprietary database he helped to develop as the “secret sauce at RenMac, which they use to compare market metrics against a universe of economic, corporate, technical and other quantitative data. This allows DeGraaf to make probabilistic Macro bets as to the likeliest results of different circumstances. Despite the problems “Macro-tourists” have been having, RenMac is managing the cross currents better than most.

Next week, we speak with professor Burton Malkiel of Princeton University, Vanguard and Yale School of Management, and author of the seminal investment book, A Random Walk Down Wall Street.
