I saw Laurence Juber this week at the Cutting Room in NYC this week, and he was awesome.
Juber is probably best known as the lead guitarist for Paul McCartney’s Wings, but its his amazing work playing the acoustic guitar that I especially appreciate. (he is also a grammy award winning composer of television and film soundtracks). You can get a sense of his technical chops on his acoustic version of Jimmi Hendrix (later Stevie Ray Vaughn’s) Little Wing.
His original compositions are also quite lovely — see Love at First Sight below.
What he does that is so unique is he simultaneously plays the rhythm AND lead AND vocals at once — no overdubs or recording tricks. This works well on a number of covers, but it especially shines when he covers The Beatles. He has 2 albums (LJ Plays the Beatles and LJ Plays The Beatles Vol. 2) with a thirds coming out later this year. These are outstanding interpretations. Faithful enough to the original so that the songs are immediately recognizable, but different enough so as to be interesting. They are standards in my musical rotation.
The night I saw him, Steve Miller (of The Steve Miller Band) joined LJ for a beautiful version of “The Joker” (below)
