Its a holidy weekend, and I have to think that even though not much is happening, you good folks have something to say.

Here’s your forum:  What are you thinking  will be the dominant theme in the coming weeks? A drift upwards? The return of the One & Done crowd? Real Estate going from hot to warm to cold to ice?

What say ye?

This summer will reveal how many pundits and prognostigators are working without a net. “I thought you said ‘soft landing’ in the housing market.” Why are mortgage rates still rising even though the Fed paused in August? How many more companies backdated options and what other reporting is reliable if this could happen? Is every market rigged to favor certain outcomes? Why were there supposedly tight commodity supplies when prices were high but plenty of resources and capacity at lower prices? How come the Fed is proving so ineffectual at controlling inflation?

Barry: The Joe Besecker and BR was a good show I miss the big guy, ok ok ok so he walks around with a steak in his pocket all day we just have to over look some things.
This fall why not have a wine tasting and stock bash, maybe upstairs at Patsy’s you could meet all of us hot dog traders.
BR now that your a TV guy does it help get a good table in any of the midtown restaurants???

    Great idea MASH.

But how about this amendment: Why don’t we put together the bash and invite Barry and his wife as the honored guests?

It would be our Thank You for hosting this great blog.

Barry and his entourage, inspiration and life partner(s), progeny, etc. are welcome here on the Left Coast anytime. Not much to offer; perspective that isn’t NYcentric, AMGN insider access, insights into immigration, agriculture, and housing but nothing uniquely special. Nonetheless quality guests are blessings not burdens.

This is an open thread. Barry, you got Ventura County covered. I hope others step up and stake out possibilities for your future itineraries.

Since Barry is cutting back content due to the new fee based services, I had suggested via email to him that he establish a “forum” section on the blog site. People could post issues and get dialog without him bringing it up on a post. For example, Anandarko’s takeover wasnt discussed by BR, although it was, in my opinion, a big deal. I played it by buying mining companies since i believe that is the trade to make for another industry ripe for consolidation. Also, interesting it was a cash deal instead of stock [even though a clueless talking head analyst said that meant “a top”– sorry, but companies use their stock when it’s overvalued, not cash] But the point is, I think the forum idea would be valuable. Similiarly, no real discussion regarding the Feds response, and its impressive impact on commodities etc. Barry, PLEASE dont make me start a blog site to pick up the slack!!

The dominant theme in the coming weeks will be the slowing economy. You can see it starting already: GM “brutal” sales month for June, WMT same store sales up only 1%, housing slowdown stories galore (I would expect some questioning of the soft landing theory as the summer progresses), “Consumers Face Challenges in Handling Debt” on Yahoo finance home page tonight, construction spending declines, etc. etc. etc.
I think the long overdue retail slowdown will be hitting soon.

nice catch, Bob A, good column and a reminder of why the expression is bullsh*t, not bearsh*t.

It have never ceased to amaze me how people immediately start looking for (and usually pronouncing) a bottom when things start to fall apart. They are never that quick to look for a top and I guess it’s all just human nature to try to whistle past the graveyard.

As it happened, I got out of the market in August 2000 once it became pretty obvious what was in store. But most of the people I knew were “snapping up bargains” if they hadn’t gotten a margin call and rode the thing down for another 6-12 months and a lot of pretend money they were trying to recover wound up vaporizing a lot of real money.

This time around, I’m being more aggressive by buying puts instead of just getting out of the way, but am still in a heavily non-equities mode overall. I can think of lots of reasons for the market to go down over the next 3-9 months and not many for it to go up for long.

This recent ramp feels like a bogus push on light volume, something to dress up the books and suck in the little guy.

Everything is running into resistance, Japan is still more likely to tighten than not, an August fed pause would be good news attached to bad, cash yields are starting to look competitive, and there’s a lot of overhead left to work through.

Time to play whack-a-mole. Got some solid gains in GDX, IYT and XLE, probably gonna kick those out on Thursday and start looking for attractive short entries in tech and retail.

Looking over the charts in TC2005 tonight, it’s interesting how much the market managed to go from oversold to very overbought in the past 3 days.

5 and 14 daily stochastics over 80 on the major indexes. Mcclellan Oscillator at 195. Zweig Breadth Thrust at 60. New High/New Low Ratio up from 12% to 83% in just 3 days.

Well, Charles Nenner said the S&P would rally up until July 10th, then resume the downtrend. If that’s the case, it’s getting set up for a fall.

  12. whipsaw commented on Jul 3

    per Craig H:
“Well, Charles Nenner said the S&P would rally up until July 10th, then resume the downtrend. If that’s the case, it’s getting set up for a fall.”

I’m not so sure about Nenner, but NFP is the 7th and I think the BoJ interest rate announcement is the 14th, so it should tank on one or the other or both of those unless we are still in “investors shrugged off” mode.

At any rate, one of the guys at minyanville observed that the NYSE Bullish Percentage Index had formed a Bear Catapult for the first time since 1955. I am not a big PnF guy so I had to go look that up, but it’s basically a Bad Thing and the implication is that it is also an Ominously Bad Thing. We’ll see, I just sense some bad juju ahead.

I suspect the Fed will come out sometime soon with more hawkish talk to try and kill the gold rise/inflation expectations. However, since they realize they are stuck between a rock and a hard place it will turn out to be just that “talk”. My guess is it will work 1 more time and on the third attempt it will be like the boy who cried wolf….and everyone knows what happens to the boy in that tale.

Does anyone have an opinion on when/if the miners will start acting independently from the market. I am a big believer that this commodity cycle will be sending prices much higher over the intermediate/long term. I am concerned however that they have seem to trade along with the general market thus far.

  16. sell_the_10_year commented on Jul 3

The world doesn’t revolve around the Fed. Historically speaking we still have very cheap money, and they are obviously terrified of strangling the housing market so their anti-inflation hands are bound.

Right now we’ve got a number of serious geopolitical probelms on our hands:

    1. Israel has thrown half the PA govt in jail. Don’t forget that Hezbollah shot Katyusha rockets at Israel a few week ago. IAF hit a car moving Katyusha rockets in Gaza after that. PLO says they have Katyusha rockets in the West Bank. That situation looks quite unstable and is slowly deteriorating.

    2. Iran is clearly not going to freeze uranium enrichment. They’ve pre-empted us by introducing gasoline rationing, so much for painful sanctions. This situation could also deteriorate quickly.

    3. Venezuela’s Chavez is increasing his public fraternizing with North Korea and Iran. It’s pretty clear that he is preparing to cut oil exports to us, and send them over to China.

I would not bet a nickel on Bush backing down on Iran. Certaintly not a penny on Iran backing down. We’ve been in a cold war with these guys for 25 years. A hot war is now clear on the horizon.

All of these factors point to a continuation of the “Commodity Super-Cycle.” Gold’s correction in finished, $1000 is just a question of when. Silver, God knows. That’s my two cents.

Looks like the perfect set-up for serious whackage later this month and lord knows that’s where I’ve placed my bets but as a wise man once said, the market’s ability to act irrationally can easily outlast my ability to remain solvent…

I’d be interested to know if anyone has thoughts on whether gold will bust through its 50 day MA to test recent highs or simply bounce off it and head lower for more consolidation.

“a Bear Catapult and baaad juju. I love it!”

Hey, get in the spirit of things! The Hindenburg Omen that Barry mentioned twice seems to be coming to fruition, so why not the Bear Catapult?

Actually, I’m not entirely sold on the NYSE Catapult since it is a sentiment indicator of sentiment indicators, but most of the things that I follow suggest that prices are rising while growth is slowing which is pretty much the definition of stagflation, so….

  19. Ryan commented on Jul 4

This economy has some serious fundamental problems that are going to be hard to solve in the coming years. The deficit is not going to be decreasing but this economic slowdown is going to cause it to increase significantly. That is going to cause the dollar to depreciate more and cause instability in the treasury markets. The housing market is going to get hit extremely hard and there is not going to be a “soft landing”. The consumer is going to be bombarded from all angles. I hope to God there isn’t a conflict with Iran.

It’s time to end this pointless War in Iraq that is accomplishing nothing, cut spending, raise taxes and start restoring fiscal sanity! It’s time to put pressure on China to float their currency and stop competing unfairly in the global marketplace. And it’s time to get control of the border and raise the minimum wage so that salaries can increase and these wealth effect bubbles are not needed to sustain the consumer.

When inflationary pressures are recognized to be independent from the “cyclical” slowdown, ie when the market realizes that inflation is STRUCTURAL, miners will divorce themselves from an ongoing equity downdraft.

What do you guys think about ETNs for commodities exposure? I’d never heard of them but ran across an article at http://biz.yahoo.com/ms/060627/167266.html?.v=1 where they are described (near the bottom). Interesting because they are tied to your choice of GSCI or DJAIG and are not a tax disaster like mutual funds and ETFs can be.

I was in DBC for a couple of months and did pretty well before I dumped it together with my other long positions in May, but didn’t think that it tracked enough commodities. The ETNs could be an attractive vehicle for dabbling in this area.

LB, you must have never watched Kudlow and Company during a Barry Ritholtz appearance.

They make light of his skeptical stance, say he is with the “cult of the bear,” and then cut what he is saying short to make way for some shill from Fifth Third Asset Management to drone on about “seeing a lot of value in large caps.”

What you want to do is get short before all these clowns panic and hit the sell button. At that point it is too late.

  29. MikeF commented on Jul 4

Barring any earth shaterring news developments, expecting US markets to trade in range bound fashion over the next two months, see overseas monetary authorities continuing to raise interest rates and this will inevitably influence the FOMC raise or pause decision. If overseas rates continue to rise, dollar will need propping up to compete. All this bodes well for gold and not so well for real estate. If I was a shorting man (which, alas, I ain’t) all this hoopla over GM looks like a primo opportunity. That said, all it would take is one or two bad CPI numbers or an infrastructure-wrecking hurricane, regional war/coup d’etats to send U.S. stocks tumbling the 10% or more that the bears have been predicting. Too much freakin’ risk….

Lots of good comments. It is interesting to me that there is such a diverse list of what might cause the downturn. Mortgage rates, deficits, the consumer, inflation, the war etc etc.

I wonder if some of these are not the symptoms of the disease and not the disease. (ie. if I sneeze, do I have a cold or allergies? ). If we identify the disease, then won’t it be easier to know how to trade?

Furthering that thought, it seems to me that geopolitical events are clearly one of the potential market drivers. However, since these events are out of our control, lets leave them out of the discussion for the moment.

So, what is the disease. I propose for discussion purposes that it is a false sense of a strong economy becuase of confusion between liquidity (cash) and real growth? We seem to be in a unique time when borrowed money is confused with real income.

As in, $94 billion for Katrina rebuilding that is really just a big fat loan with one of those retail like payment plans. Ya know what I am talking about. Buy a mattress now from us and no payments until January 2008!

If this is the case, then will not the markets be basically bullish until this cash really starts to dry up. As in no new sources to fool us anymore and we finally have to start making serious payments too?

  32. trader75 commented on Jul 4

Those who see a hyper-inflationary ramp may well stumble into the huge deflationary pothole between here and there.

What will happen to inflationary pressures when consumer spending tanks and Asia hits the skids? What happens when we realize that sky high energy prices can be a nasty deflationary force when they suck all the money out of consumers’ wallets? What happens if we get a cold winter this time around and natural gas skyrockets, further squeezing discretionary income? What happens when a $1700 mortgage on a 3 bedroom starter house suddenly stops feeling like a ticket to prosperity and starts feeling like a taste of debtors prison? How inflationary will the overall environment feel when corporate profits go into freefall?

Gold could whacked again, and whacked hard, when the inflationary chatter melts away as folks start to see the big SLOWDOWN sign. If this happens, you’ll again see the folks who don’t really know what’s going on dump gold b/c the inflation story is “over.”

But then when the WSJ is nattering on about deflation and everyone is ringing their hands about the backbreaking level of debt we are facing and the threat of economic decline–topics that aren’t mainstream yet–that is when the fed starts looking like savior of last resort once again. That is when Ben rolls out his trusty printing press and dons his Anti-Great Depression Superhero Suit. And that’s when gold goes to the moon.

We could still dodge that pothole and keep the growth game going but I don’t see how we do it. Leverage and debt accumulation have kept consumer spending strong in the face of sky high energy prices, and those options are going away The only way energy backs off is if the US consumer gives in first, and if that happens Asia is in trouble too which means the deflationary ball is in play.

    Bob A: great article.

Craig H: Its interesting how earnings season starts July 10th.

I think its real hard to say where the market is going short term. I think intermediate to long term you can say its going down.

The extent to this bounce will be determined by the strength of this earnings season and the guidance companies give going forward. It’s really hard to imagine though that companies won’t feel the pinch of higher energy prices, higher interest rates, a slowing housing market (–> decreased consumer spending), and be able to maintain the strength of earnings they’ve had thus far.

This piece on Chinese domestic credit markets is of interest. The most salient point for investors is that, despite what the author says he wants, his description makes it seem quite unlikely that China will be able to shift from an export-centered economy to one centered on domestic demand.

    http://www.atimes.com/atimes/China/HF28Ad01.html

“As well, the conference heard, insurance companies as well as banks must put their funds to better work financing prudent and worthy projects. Such projects so far are mostly state-owned enterprises, producing about 20% of total gross domestic product, but sucking in about 70% of all outstanding bank credit. The SOEs are responsible from almost all non-performing bank loans. But pension money has to be put to good use, neither wasted on risky businesses that could lose the fund, nor invested with undue caution, thereby providing returns that are too low.

Non-state companies, if possible, try to avoid taking money from the banks, even if interest is relatively low. They do not want to be exposed to possible financial and tax controls, and are willing to pay 30% interest or more to moneylenders, loan sharks and pawnshops, to whom they can reveal their wealth without fear that the information will be passed on to some state officials.

Banks are also unwilling to lend to private firms: if an SOE doesn’t pay up, the bank official will not be held responsible – the bank will extend the credit terms. But if a private company doesn’t pay up, then the official could be go under review to establish if he had any dealings under the table with the failed company.”

This twisted structure also means that the way things respond within China to changes, for example yuan revaluation, might turn out quite different from the text book.

This is the greatest economy i the history of the world, but terrorist loving American hating Democrats try to talk it down just as the liberal media lost the war in Iraq. The stock market sould go up and real estate is undervalued. If the economy was allowed to act through free market forces the value would increase and we would be able to borrow thousands every year off of 15% appreciation while retiring millioniares because this is the greatest country in the world and all the foreigners want to send their money here because it’s a great investment.

But socialists such as yourself bad mouth the economy and destroy capitalism!

  36. john commented on Jul 4

True Blue – I was going to stay out of this but such nonsense makes me wonder if you might be a member of the most useless administration in the history of the world (never mind America).

Can one really “destroy capitalism” simply by bad mouthing the economy? I’m glad the Soviets never knew that secret. Enough of that nonsense.

Anyway once again we wonder where we are going without knowing where we are. Energy – let’s see – hurricane season… I don’t think energy should go down until the end of that. Gold – inflation has been present in our economy for 100 years, or so I’m told, yet gold picked last year to notice it? I don’t think so.

Interest rates are rising – yet businesses are rolling in cash. If you are rolling in cash you are doing two things – 1 not borrowing and 2 paying off debt with cheap, inflation ravaged dollars (how’m I do’n so far?)

Interest rates are rising and we are concerned about the consumer yet the consumer has never let something as trivial as interest rates stop him in the past. But this time it’s different – it really is – trust me.

Oh BullShit! Nobody knows nothing. Not you, not me, not that marvelous bunch of pretenders in Washington, certainly not the media (noone’s told them what to think yet), not Fox, NBC, CBS, or ABC – Disney doesn’t know nor does Pluto, Mickey, Minnie or the kids. So – if nobody knows nothing – what can we do – oh shit – oh dear – follow the market, my friends – follow the market. Buy the dips, sell the rips and stop waiting for some magical moment in never-never land when you might “know” because it ain’t happening.

    Have a happy…

You are using K&C guests to think that the bear ideology is the minority. Well, not on all of the trader/investor message boards. The Bear argument almost always seems more logical and academic and such. It reminds me of a saying…”would you rather be right or make money?”

Everyone knows the bearish reasons that the market “should” go down. These have been around for years now. There’s one person who has heard all of these reasons and hasn’t seemed to care though…who could that be….oh yeah….The Market!!!

See you all at higher highs.

P.S. This isn’t directed at anyone in particular, just the board in general. The traders will just watch their indicators and be fine playing the market both ways (like me), but the investors who are on this board will be hurt by either shorting this market or by not participating.

Eer, I think true Blue was being sacastic. In my view the direction of the dollar will be purely driven by the momentum of the base rate spread between Fed Funds and other G7 central banks (the prime two being ECB and BOJ). Forward indicators of inflation (ECRI FIG) have peaked since Q4 2005 in the US but are still rising in Europe. So although I beleive inflation is in a long term secular upswing the signs are that we we are due a growth driven (or lack of) cyclical correction in inflation. Now REAL yields in Japan and Europe are much lower than the US, which implies that going forward the ECB and BOJ will narrow the rate gap ( to maintain their inflation fighting credibility versus FED) and therefore depreciate the dollar and inflate GOLD (for currency reasons and NOT inflation expectations). In this window I expect Gold to retest and fail at its 1980 high of $850 ish , obviously you would expect dollar depreciation to encourage the FED to raise rates just that little bit further than it needed to and that is where I suspect the risk of it going a little to far. But it will earn its inflation fighting stripes and I expect the $ to re-assert itself at the expense of growth. Commodities spend the following 1 year to 18 months consolidatating at 50% to 60% of their cyclical peaks until the FED turns on liquidity by cutting rates, but the curve will steepen rapidly as I don’t expect long rates to respond to easing as they have in the past given the still elevated value of commodities and non US$ currencies relative to the similar easing period 2001 to 2003. THIS IS JUST AN IDEA, ANY COMENTS?

There is too much housing for sale at over-inflated prices for it not to come back and pound all of those holders of mortgage-backed securities, as marginal buyers walk away from their purchases. To say noting of the ‘disposable income’ which will evaporate for many recent home buyers who are ‘better off’, as their ARMs reset.

There are at least fifty times more investors who blindly follow the recommendations of their brokers than investors who follow recommendations they read on internet boards.

Therefore these bearish boards are very much a contrarian POV, and most likely will continue to be for a long time.

Per your second point, I don’t think any investors have made any worthwhile profit clinging onto the bull argument in 2006. We must face it, U.S. equities had their run in the dot-com days. Those days are gone.

In many ways the U.S. has been reduced to the status of the “pathetic helpless giant.”

  47. Everyday Economist commented on Jul 4

I am not as convinced as some that the market is going to fall in the second half of the year. Here is why:

    — Call/Put ratios are low. Normally this is a contrarian indicator that signals an upward move in the market.

    — The cost of borrowing is still low historically.

    — Contrary to what many CNBC guests believe, the market and the economy can do well with interest rates over 5%. This anxiety reflects short-term hopes rather than useful predictions. If the Fed fails to control inflation, we would see much higher interest rates later.

Also, while the economy and the market does not revolve around the Fed, the actions of that body have the ability to influence the current market more than any event short of a catastrophe.

Let’s hope that Bernanke and Co. go to 5.5 or even 5.75% to get this inflation under control.

In the meantime, it’s time to begin taking profits on gold if you have not already done so.

    Enjoy your vacation BR.

I couldn’t believe my ears, when he said that it would be a BAD thing if taxes were raised, and no, the budget deficit and national debt were not troubling to him. Did you see the look on Sen. Kent Conrad’s face? (Why don’t the Democrats trot him out more often– the man is the only one who understands the budget!) He was speechless, after showing some really SCARY charts. Henry Paulson– Bob Rubin you ain’t!!

    per Everyday Economist:

“In the meantime, it’s time to begin taking profits on gold if you have not already done so.”

Wow, you must be a real economist since I went into an XAU/USD trade at oanda on the surmise that you don’t have any idea of what you are talking about and closed it an hour later for a $300 gain. Please keep the tells coming!

    whipsaw:

Anything is ripe for a trade under certain circumstances. For investors, not traders, it is time to take profits on gold.

  53. whipsaw commented on Jul 5

Just pulling your chain a bit Economist. But I don’t think that there are any gold investors anyway, just speculators and worshipers. The worshipers won’t dump it regardless of what is going on while speculators don’t consider gold any more important than corn or beans and are just as likely to short as buy from week to week.

I suspect that gold will hit $490~ at some point in the near term (most likely while I am long!), but don’t have much doubt that it will then approach $1000 within the next 6-9 months. What happens after that remains to be seen, but I can think of other ways to double up in that timeframe that do not involve actively challenging the central banks of the world and would lean towards those choices instead.

That jobs number this morning was ominous. Bernanke should have hiked 50 basis points.

We’ve got a mess on our hands. Oil at $75 and no retreat in sight. Strong job growth. Rising rents. The next inflation numbers are going to be killers.

Bernanke has no choice but to continue hiking, housing market be damned. Now the folly of our ways and the Feds ways are going to come through loud and clear. We must continue hiking to keep inflation under control. It doesn’t matter that millions of households are going to financially perish when they can’t service their mortgages.

This is going to get ugly.

It could have all been prevented by raising rates sooner. Didn’t anyone see that ? All this talk of one and done and 4% being neutral was BS. Why the hell did Greenspan let the housing bubble keep growing ? Idiot. He couldn’t see it ? Was he blind ?

BTW: I’ve made a ton of $$$ in oil stocks lately. Devon, COP and Talisman. I was in before the Bernanke speach and sold off at a gain. I bought in immediately after and am still riding up.

BK: where are you getting your numbers from ?

whipsaw…It’s not nice to tease the board like that

  57. whipsaw commented on Jul 5

I was teasing about the reason for the gold trade, but not the trade itself, it really did work. So well I ran it again this morning with similar results.

Predictably, I then switched over to silver and am somewhat under water this time around. Oh well….
