Thanks to John B who tips us to this wonderful piece of music, first heard on "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip". Its from the Troy Andrews Quintet (see The End Of The Beginning). For more info, see the The Tipitina’s Foundation Mission
Their Christmas episode featured a group of New Orleans musicians, organized by the Tipitina’s Foundation, playing a beautiful and original arrangement of "Oh Holy Night" for the show, featuring:
Musicians benefiting from The Tipitina’s Foundation
Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, Trumpet
Kirk Joseph, Sousaphone
Roderick Paulin, Saxophone
Frederick Shepherd, Saxophone
Stephen Walker, Trombone
Mervin "Kid Merv" Campbell, Trumpet
Bob French, Drums
If you recognize the name Tipitina, its a song from Professor Longhair’s Rock ‘n Roll Gumbo, extolling a New Orleans Club. Several well kown New Orlean artists have recorded albums at club Tipitina’s, including Dr. John (Right Place, Right Time), Neville Brothers (Live at Tipitina’s 1982), and Tuts Washington (Live at Tipitina’s ’78).

Totally off topic, but this is an amusing diversion….liquidity and credit spread issues sung to the tune of raindrops keep falling on my head.
I just got back from the Big Easy…Dr. john playing The House of Blues 28th, 29th. Check this good musak: John autin/ ‘piano face’; ‘from The lone star to The gulf coast’….proceeds to the Tipatina’s foundation…OR go see John Autin at the Carousel Bar @ The monteleone hotel.
Back on topic, I saw Troy Andrews two years ago at Donna’s in NOLA. Kermit Ruffin sat in for a few numbers. The Saxophone player James Martin? was terrific as well. It was the best live show I saw that trip. If you get the chance to see him live please do very high energy show. I wish he would record a live show with the current band because I think the live stuff is much better than the studio work.
Now if you visit NO please get away from Bourbon street to see some real music! Some of my favorites are listed below.
Donna’s is within walking distance of the french quarter, get in a cab for the rest:
