Grapevine Fires

Its a long holiday weekend, and the crowd is off to where ever they are going. For those of you left behind — or arriving where ever you will be — check out these tunes:

I love this Death Cab for Cutie song — and I stumbled across an interesting pair of videos:

The first is this live version, essentially played with no studio effects or tape.

Here’s the same video, with what sounds like the official audio version — all cleaned up, and added backing vocals — it sounds slightly speeded up also.

I don’t think they sped it up (both versions are the same length), but you can really see the magic of using computers to tweak the intonation on those held notes. Turns out very few people can hold a note without their voices wavering a little. Tastefully done here, but I find many records overdo this “fix.” Ten years ago it was obvious when vocals were digitally enhanced. Now the technology is so good it’s gotten hard to tell.

DCFC is pretty nice to listen to at first, but after a while you kind of just want to kill yourself.

Integrity bank today in Alpharetta, GA was taken over by the FDIC. I live in Roswell but obviously we have branch banks in town. This comment in the AJC surprised me though “The Alpharetta-based bank, which opened its doors in 2000 with a Christian-centered philosophy, is the 10th U.S. bank to fail this year and the second Georgia institution to fail in the past 12 months.” I hate to be rude but I live here and have no idea what a Christian bank is. wtf…

Thanks Barry – I’ve been missing your music recommendations

Obviously, it’s a bank that gets crucified on a Friday and arises a few short days after.

you guys should check out Bedroom Walls. they are a Los Angeles band…their last album did OK and got some media attention, but they are far less known than they should be. A total genius band, and their last album is stunningly great.

There’s this new band that’s hitting the road nationwide – GrandPa and the MILF. Their repetiore is a somewhat tired rehash of themes played in a repetiive drone occasioned by the occasional shrill theme. GrandPa may or may not be up for the demands of the long haul and it doesn’t appear that the MILF is up to the demands of carrying the band. this tour looks to be short lived.

As a big time fan of DCFC, it is strange to see what I consider to be arguably their worst release to date being their greatest commercial success.

If you want to see great DCFC check out their classic releases, Transatlanticsm and The Photo Album. You might be interested in Ben Gibbard’s side project The Postal Service if you like a more electronic sound.

BR: I mentioned Postal Service on my best of back in 2004 . . .

I do love this band, but their music on each album sounds too similar. Also, speeded isn’t a word, just wanted to share. Thanks for the videos!
