In the latest “Masters in Business” podcast, I speak with Lakshman Achuthan of Economic Cycle Research Institute.
Achuthan is the institute’s co-founder, chief operations officer and managing editor of its forecasting publications. He is also a member of Time magazine’s board of economists, a member of the Levy Institute’s board of governors and the author of “Beating the Business Cycle: How to Predict and Profit From Turning Points in the Economy.”
In our conversation, we discuss what recessions actually are, how best to identify them in real time and when governments should — and should not — seek to avoid them. We also discuss the New York Times profile of the Economic Cycle Research Institute and Achuthan from several years ago, which raised the firm’s profile beyond the institutions, governments and central banks who rely on its research. (It also resulted in a version of the magazine-cover curse: Following the story, the firm’s next forecast was wrong.)

Next week, we speak with appraiser and real-estate-analytics expert Jonathan Miller, a Bloomberg View contributor and co-founder of Miller Samuel.
