“the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short” – Thomas Hobbes

Modern medicine has changed the last condition into “long” as the expected lifespan has doubled since Hobbes time. The Austrian and Chicago Schools of economics appear focused on maintaining the other conditions in place for the average person though. The assault on Obamacare and environmental initiatives also appears to be focused on returning to the Hobbesian “short” condition. At least Keynes tried to modify the other conditions.
