I was able to have a similar experience some years back… I went out one night with a friend to a relatively dark location where he had his 12″ reflecting telescope set up. I was able to simply point the telescope anywhere in the direction of Coma Berenices — without aiming at anything specific — and when I looked in the eyepiece, there would be a galaxy in the field of view.
