There is a lot of talk about OPEC losing its muscle but I have to admit surprise at the willingness of the major powers to allow such huge economic dislocation that comes with the extreme volatility in the energy markets throwing an accelerant onto a volatile world. The situation in Syria, the rise of Isis, the rise of nationalistic political parties in Europe (that have grown with the refugee crisis), the political climate in the US that has given rise not just to Trump but to Cruz and even Sanders, the economic mess in Russia (with Putin stoking nationalism to control his people), and the negative repercussions in South America, particularly in Brazil, Venezuela, and Equador are all real threats to the quality of life. Of course if you sold energy short, drive an SUV, don’t care about climate change and cheap energy’s promotion of the use of carbon, and want your political leaders to lean fascist you are looking good.
