Over at our sister blog, essays & effluvia (now, 100% Economics free!) I gathered numerous election map post-mortems. Most of these were just lying around the internet gathering dust anyway.
These graphic representations of the election’s outcome are thought provoking.

Over Represented Rural Areas
You think Map day only lasts 24 hours? Wrong! Cartographers party like its 1599! Here’s yet another look at the United States, and a suggestion for reforming the electoral college (hint: it overweights rural areas): Click for larger map Advantages…

Election Results 2004: Maps Galore

“The First Thing I Want to Say is, ‘Mandate’ My Ass”
In the wake (or is it “aftermath”?) of the U.S. Presidential election, I’ve been amazed and appalled (though not particularly surprised) at the claim that a 51% to 48% majority constitutes a mandate.
I made a bunch of maps you might like here:
http://obsidianorder.blogspot.com/2004/11/red-and-blue-reprise-2004.html
I try to show population density and vote by county at the same time for the 2004 results, and compare with 2000.
One point, the simple red-to-blue maps almost always paint an inaccurate picture, because color perception is very tricky. It makes a huge difference what the exact red and blue colors are, and what the midpoint is. America is not purple ;)

Election Maps
The Big Picture has a fascinating round-up of links to “election maps”. Some of them are very illuminating, and demonstrate grahically that the presentation of data can have an enormous influence on how we perceive it.

I am looking for a reverse map, Since there were over a hundred million people who did not vote. If you took a map looked at the percentage of voters who voted per state or county, compared that to the population of the state or county, you would have a truly interesting map. I know that not all the people who live in a stae or county are registered to vote, however I would like to know where all these non voters live.
Where can I find a breakout of Bush percentages by CD? For all 435 CDs. . .
