My favorite headline regarding the Blockbuster (BBI) with Circuit City (CC) merger comes from my friend John, formerly of GMSV, now of All Things Digital:
CircuitBuster Would Merge Failure With Fiasco http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20080414/circuitbuster/
Classic!
one piece of crap plus another piece of crap= a pile of crap
This one tops the Kmart/Sears debacle.
OT, but related to dumb things, I just found an old post from December:
The big rise in inflation demonstrated the pressures facing the Federal Reserve, which is trying to combat a sharp slowdown in economic growth while at the same time making sure that inflation does not get out of hand.
At the White House, press secretary Dana Perino said that one bad report on inflation “doesn’t make a trend.”
Astounding. I thought Yahoo/MSFT was “Dumb and Dumberer”. You sure the date wasn’t April 1 on that headline?
I can only imagine the snicker’s this produced over at NFLX this morning……
Antioco (former CEO of BBI) lives!!!!!!
Ciao
MS
Don’t leave out Delta + Northwest.
As we have seen in the past, loser plus loser equals big loser.
The frantic mating of dinosaurs in the shadow of the giant incoming asteroid…
Like Fannie/Freddie and subprime loans?
I wish Blockbuster would instead merge with First Marblehead – at least we’d have a better headline:
BlockHead Merger On Tap!
Two lame dogs tied together by their good legs?

I actually think the merger could make a lot of sense…devices and delivery formats are worthless, so both businesses find themselves hawking commodities…the value is in the content, and how that content is experienced. So if Blockbuster and Circuit City could combine into some integrated offering…well, it would be a massive leap, but there could be something in the idea. I’ve blogged about it at some length at DIM BULB if you’d like to check it out: http://dimbulb.typepad.com/my_weblog/2008/04/those-who-cant.html

“f Blockbuster and Circuit City could combine into some integrated offering..”
Netflix movie downloads. Apple movie downloads with Apple TV.
What you want, when you want without going to Blockbuster or CC.
I might have know Icahn was behind this. This is about as brilliant as Motorola spinning off the phone business.
