Trend toward renting
Source: Merrill Lynch
Quite astonishing way to depict the data of longer term trend toward renting: One of the outcomes of the housing bust was a decisive increase in the population of renters.
From 2007 through 2012, there have been over 5 million new renters, which came at the expense of 1.2 million fewer homeowners.
The trend has yet to significantly reverse itself (yet). And 2005-06 were obviously outlier years; I’d like to see this data going back decades.
Even still, the above chart astonishes.
